Percentage is multiplicative

When a discount of 50% is applied on an item, and then you get another 50% discount on top of that, you don’t get the item for free!
Instead, you still have to pay a quarter (1/4, or 25%) of the original price, or with a 75% discount1.

Now that’s more like it! (huh?) (ignore the ‘up to’ for a moment here) (image source)
Thank you (again) for coming to my TED talk.

50% ✕ 50% = 0.5 ✕ 0.5 = 0.25 = 25% = (100 ﹣ 75) %. ↩︎
